Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni is a border town just across the Marowijne River, on the other side of Suriname. There are neatly laid out streets, buildings with wrought iron gates and brick masonry walls. Like any French village there is a Quartorze Juillet square and a market. The famous Camp du Transportation (from the book "Papillon") is also located in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni.
